GEOLOGIC AND SEISMIC STUDIES IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND LEARNED LESSONS FOR SEISMIC RISK ASSESSMENT IN SE SPAIN (SISMOCAES PROJECT)

Duration, from: January 1969  to: January 2014   Budget: 142.000 €
Principal Investigator: B. Benito   Number of participants: 23

This is a coordinated project that integrates two subprojects GeoTACTICA and ASPERIDES respectively led by a group of Active Tectonics and Paleoseismicity of the Geodynamics Department at the Complutense University of Madrid and by the Earthquake Engineering Group of the Technical University of Madrid.

The global objectives of the coordinated project are:

a) To improve seismic hazard estimates integrating results of detailed geological studies on active tectonic structures (paleoseismicity, GPS-based control of deformation) and static Coulomb failure stresses modeling results.

b) Enlarge the knowledge on earthquake-triggered landslides, deducing models calibrated by weighting of factors taking part in the phenomenon (geotechnical characterization, slope, roughness, intensity of motion, etc.)

c) Final application to seismic risk: calculation of a damage scenario in a high-hazard municipality identified in Southern Spain.
