The basic objective of the project was the development of a rational method of analysis of landslide hazard trigerred by earthquake events. This methodology was apllied in El Salvador, taking advantage of the significant amount of data resulting from the 2001 devastating earthquakes (more than 800 landslide sites, strong-motion recordings and macroseismic intensity assessments).
The project was articulated in these lines:
• Ground motion characterisation.
• Numerical modeling of landslide initiation and propagation.
• Identification of landslide areas by means of remote sensing, photogrametric and cartographic techniques that could aid marking landslide-risky areas.
• Protection and retrofit measurements.
The methodological approach consisted on the calibrated combination of different factors contributing to landslide susceptibility (slope, land use, lithology, precipitation, etc.) with the aid of geographic information systems. Country-wide landslide susceptibility maps and country-wide landslide hazard maps were main results of the project.
