CONFIGURATION OF A GPS CONTROL NETWORK IN THE EL SALVADOR FAULT ZONE

Entities participants: ETSI Topografía, Geodesia y Cartografía (UPM), Servicio Nacional de Estudios Terriroriales de El Salvador (SNET)
Financied by: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
Duration, from: December 2006  to: November 2007   Budget: 10.000€
Principal Investigator: A. Staller   Number of participants: 5

The main objective of the project is to suppport different research activities that are currently under progress in El Salvador by the development of a GPS Control Network for the precise determination of deformations and motions related to the El Salvador Fault Zone (ESFZ), thereby complementing existing data and results of those acivities and guaranteing the elaboration of risk diagnosis.

Specific goals of the prject include: :

  1. Detailed study of the El Salvador Fault Zone (ESFZ), which presents high seismic risk.
  2. Configuration of a GPS Control Network for the precise determination of fault-related ground deformations and displacements.
  3. Development of a first GPS observation survey, which yield initial data for the computation of anual deformations and displacements.
  4. Capacity-building of local technical staff  (from SNET) in the use of GPS technologies for the assessment of crustal deformations.
